In Britain today more than 6 million of us employ domestic help in the form of cleaners – a job primarily done by immigrants arriving in the UK looking for work. What do the contents of our homes and our interactions with a workforce paid to clean up after us reveal about us? With access to cleaners and their clients this documentary lifts the lid on what our cleaners really think about us. It also tells the story of an invisible class struggling to earn a living and make a life in the UK.
Press:
The classical score and abstractly shot cleaning scenes almost elevated the profession to an art form. But the truth came out: this was physical, grubby, often underpaid work, done by people living on a wing and a prayer – and hoping for a decent person at the other side of the door.
The Independent
The fascinating accord between cleaner and employer is comical, riddled with middle-class anxiety, and tells a bigger story – that of present-day migration.
